  1. no, i would think pole vaulting or javelin would be...err well at least javelin for the judges...

  2. Diving is very dangerous, I saw a diver smash her teeth against the board once, it was terrible.

I think overall though, gymnastics are very dangerous (I was an elite gymnast and I got so many injuries I can't even count them anymore)

but the far most dangerous is equestrian, if you fall off you can very easily smash your ribs and many people (and horses) have died from the sport.

  3. i think the most dangerous sport in the Olympic is basketball because the dream team members are so smelly. it can kill their competitors instantly.

  4. There have been cases of people smacking the diving board or platform, but it rarely happen. Gymnastics and Equestrian events are the most dangerous. Pole Vault is not dangerous if you know what you are doing, there is rarely ever an injury and if there is it's usually a freak accident.

  5. I guess this would depend on certain criteria, although diving off that tall platform does have the risk of potential major injury if one would slip or not rotate and hit the water wrong.

Sailing in the storms like they did the other day is dangerous, there were a lot of boats that capsized, major potential for drowning there.

The triathlon in Sydney 8 years ago, was swam in waters known to be shark waters....being eaten is not my definition of safe..

ANd don;t forget the judge in the javelin competition  years ago that got speared,,,,,

Baseball has had its share of fatalities over the years. just 2 years ago a minor league first base coach died on the field when he got hit in the temple with a foul ball

So my opinion, is no,  diving is not the most dangerous sport.

  6. it depends upon height and man's confidence.

yes it is so obvious that it could be dangerous

  7. No...I'd have to say the Javiline throw

  8. No, there was this horse sport(forget what it's called), but it killed a couple of people recently.

  9. I would say the equestrian events have more potential for danger.

Yipes--I just watched the BMX quarterfinals--I'd say BMX also ranks up there for danger.

Do they use actual bullets for the shooting events?

  10. I think equestrian would be. If you fall off the horse while trying to jump over some obstacle the horse can trample over you.

  11. If things go wrong I think any of the sports/events could be considered dangerous. Look at the weightlifting accident this Olympics. Ouch!! Or even the Aussie basketballer's rolled ankle over the oppositions foot. Or even Anna Meares's broken neck in that shocking incident on her bike 8 months ago.

Although I think I would have to agree that Horse riding (mostly the cross country and jumping) would be the most dangerous. That's a lot of animal that you may not always be able to control.

I wouldn't put javelin up there. Yes an official got stabbed once or twice but that's because their standing out in front of the person throwing a spear. You wouldn't get me standing out there in the field and in amateur athletics we certainly waited behind before collecting them.

  12. The most dangerous sports in my opinion are:

    Diving

    The Uneven Bars in Gymnastics

    anything with horses

  13. Gymnastics is definitaly one of the most dangerous sports and more dangerous than diving.

I use to do it and it was so hard and you can get injured really badly.

Also equestrian because the horses can be unpredictable and you can also fall off at high speeds, especially cross country.

But diving is definatley not as dangerous as many other sports. Even bmx etc

  14. I personally think that ultra long distance events would be the most dangerous. The effects of exhaustion and dehydration can be really ugly and can result in permenant kidney damage.

Then there's the chronic overuse injuries. Such things can cause serious long term damage to the muscles/bones/joints/nerves. Long term stress on the body can also seriously impair mental function.

Marathon runners have been known to pass out and collapse on the track. In its most extreme case a "meltdown" of the body can occur where the athlete loses all control of his/her bodily functions. This is not good. Extreme migrains and partial loss of eyesight can also occur as a result of long term sun exposure.

People who engage in these kinds of events also risk heart attacks and death.

Marathon swimming presents these kinds of dangers with the additional risk of hypothermia - a common condition suffered by open water swimmers even in relatively warm water.

The other dangerous sport is cycling - both track and road. This sport is dangerous in terms of impact with other riders (or cars) as well as the dangers of the abovementioned points regarding exhaustion.

  15. Synchronised Swimming

  16. My vote goes for Equestrian, especially cross-country jumping.  Ever been thrown from your horse head first into a log jump 5 feet tall.  Ouch.

  17. I think I agree, particularly the 10 meter platform version.

But also long competitions like the marathon or race walking are dangerous if the athlete is not well prepared. I have seen more athletes taken to the hospital in the marathon than in diving.

Also the javelin throw is a bit dangerous, not to the thrower but to other unsuspecting people. See this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhT30Ov41...
