Question:

Would either of these be considered reckless driving?

Both of these at an intersection with a stoplight.

1. The light is red but you are familiar with the light and time it just right so that you don't stop or even slow down but instead cruise through it over 30 mph (under the speed limit) right when it turns green.

2. You're stopped at the red light but as soon as it turns green you speed up to the speed limit way ahead of everyone else.

I'm just wondering, if there happened to be a cop near by and saw you do either of those, if he could pull you over for reckless driving or something else.

  1. No.  I do both all the time.  Unless there is another circumstance that rules you were a danger, you did not break any driving laws as far as Im concerned.

  2. Yes, it is reckless.  In both cases, the driver isn't allowing time

for a late arrival to clear the intersection.  Lots of drivers push

their luck at intersections this way.  It would be only a matter of

time until the driver in your example is "t-boned."

  3. 1) I do this all the time. ...but I pay attention to the traffic ahead in case of stalled vehicles, red light runners, etc. If the view of the entire intersection is obstructed in any manner I slow even more.

    2) In the state of Texas that will get you a ticket real fast.

  4. I agree with most of the others on the first question....not a good idea. The second one I speak from experience. It varies a great deal on the mood of the officer but you can get a "exhibition of acceleration" ticket. I thought that only applied to burning rubber but I was wrong. They are high priced, extra points on driving record, and insurance companies really look down at that. I like to move with a purpose in life but some officers don't care even if I never broke the speed limit.

  5. 1. Yes..................failing to use caution, and what if someone runs a red light coming the OTHER way?

2.Yes...................due to lack of care and control, intersections are where most crashes happen.......not a great idea.....

  6. 1.  Yes, it could be, depending upon the officer's opinion.  It is not a good thing to do...what if someone stalls out or runs the red?

    2.  Again, yes, it could be, depending upon the officer's opinion.  Usually excessive accelleration is considered to be reckless driving...and again, what if someone has stalled or runs the red?

  7. I'm not sure.  But even if number 1 is legal, I wouldn't recommend it, because if someone coming the other way decided to run the red light, neither of you might be able to stop in time, and you might get into an accident.

  8. The police will get you on both of those for reckless driving.

  9. Just number (1)......................

  10. My first thought of impression was it might be legal what your doing, but not safe!

Safety is the first law of driving, If your mind is on beating the light( first scenario) then your not being as careful  as you would be otherwise!

(second scenario) Again wouldn't be illegal, but would it be safe, that would depend upon if there was another car next to you or on the side roads, again safety always comes first.

Unsure if you would or would not be pulled over for this, since you haven't legally broke the law.

They could make a good argument saying your driving could possibly invite an accident.

That's the best I can do on your question, I hope it helps!
