  1. Another layer between your goodies and the criminal is never a bad idea. Definitely bolt it down in a tight area, such as a closet so it would take a lot of time and effort for a baddie to run off with it - or your stuff.

  2. Yes,

a safety deposit box at a bank would be better.

  3. The quality of a money chest - or what you call a safe is in its Underwriters Laboratory rating.

Money chests receive a TL and TR rating from UL.

TL is the time someone spends attacking the safe with tools and are not able to get in - ratings start at 15 minutes -so a TL15 rating is just that.

TR - is the dame but for torch - That is a TR rating.

The chest you are looking at which is 5 pounds probably does not have a TR/TL rating.  I would suspect it is a records chest built to outlast heat instead of a burglar.  I hope this helps you

  4. Bolted down would help.  My parents have one that weighs 700 pounds empty...That thing isn't going anywhere.  It would also depend on how you bolt it down.  If they can access the bolts, and unscrew, they it won't protect anything.

  5. Anything that can slow a thief down will be helpful. Make sure you make use of the bolt down feature, because if you don't the thief will just carry it away and it will defeat the whole purpose. Also keep in mind that even though you have a safe, you may still want to bolt it down in a hiding spot. Bolt it somewhere where the thief won't be able to easily locate it. Some good examples might be underneath a bureau that you could just slide over a little bit to access it, or maybe in a closet under some clothes, or in a bathroom behind a piece of furniture, etc. Also don't let "ANYONE" know you have it! Often times people are robbed because someone knows of the valuables. If someone finds out you have a safe, then a thief might expect a small fortune if they find that safe and will create a challenge for them to break in and find the safe and attempt to steal it. Now if you have a house alarm you've just protected yourself 200% more because they will have a lot of work to locate, unbolt/pry, steal and get away before the police respond to the alarm call.

  6. Think of it this way.if you have a bicycle and park it next to the road, a high percentage of crooks may steal it. if you move the bike under the carport a lower percentage of crooks may steal it. If you take the bike into the house a smaller number of crooks may steal it. You will never totally eliminate the possibility of your belongings being stolen, but you can significantly reduce the chances. Buy the safe!

  7. A safe would be a good investment. It will not necessarily keep a thief from stealing your belongings but it will definitely slow them down. In slowing the thief down it may amount to catching them. I own a safe and I do store some valuable items in it. However, it just really depends on how bad a thief wants what is in that safe. Hopefully that helps your decision.
