I will be passing into the IRR after the next 3 months. I'm not really sure if i want to join the Marine reserves because i don't want to be activated yet I still want to do Marine Corps things such as attend Sgt's course and MCMAP courses. I've witnessed IRR marines activate themselves so they can go to 2-3 month long military exercises. Wouldn't i be alble to do the same?

  1. Yes, you can activate yourself during your IRR time.  My husband got a few phone calls from his reserve command while he was on IRR looking for him to do  a few of those things.  Just talk to the people at your reserve command and see what they can hook you up with.  My understanding, too, is that if you're activating yourself during that time, you can get reserve drill credit, which can still count toward promotion.  That's something you should definitely ask about when you do seps/taps.
