  1. If you've skated or snowboarded before you've got a better shot, but don't expect much. I started when I was eight and it took me a week of two hour sessions before I stood up on a legitimate wave (not the white wash).  My brother on the other hand started when he was eleven and got up his first try... course he went up and straight down, but both feet touched the board at least.

So if you have decent coordination and you would consider standing in white-wash as counting then the answers yes. If you've never really skated or snowboarded and you'll only count standing on an open face (wave that hasn't yet broken), then the answer is maybe.

  2. well most people if started on a long board will get up there first time. but many people are different.

but you should be able to.

    GET lessons!

  3. Sure it's possible.  Just be sure to go on a day where the waves are calmer, and try to balance on a long board first.  Like anything else, it takes a lot of practice.  Good Luck!

  4. Surfing is an ocean sport. before you decide to surf, decide to know and understand the ocean. Learn to be at home with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes BIG waves. The original surfers were watermen (and women, both men and women surfed, but certain waves were reserved for royalty).

I spent almost all of my teen years, swimming, sailing, surfing, scuba diving and fishing. I even surfed in different places the Navy sent me, when it was possible.

Surfing is an ocean sport, to do it right, you have to be at home in the ocean, with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes big waves. I don't just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. I have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don't want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave. You can't do that without an ocean.

Lessons are usually the best way to start, unless you are an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook you up with lessons, and even rent you a board to learn on. Just work on your basics, and after you feel good, think about buying a board, but don't rush into anything.

Be careful of what you read here on line. There are lots of really well meaning young folks who have neat answers about surfing, but at 55, I tend to classify anyone under 25 as a kid. After I found this site, I figured that I could answer a few questions, and spread the 'good news' of surfing. After you learn to swim and master the ocean, get your REAL advice from a surf shop, where industry professionals earn their rent money selling surfboards. However, if they think you are just a 'kook' tourist out to rent a board, you won't necessarily get the best attention.

If you are getting lessons from a professional, and you are surfing in nice easy waves, it is entrirely possible that you could stand up (a least a little) on your first day. But, let's be honest, it takes a LONG time to learn to surf. It may take several days of lessons. I started in 1966, and it took me a whole summer to get 'decent' and I didn't really get 'good' until well into my second summer. And I had been swimming, body surfing and body boarding for years before I started to surf.

THE REAL BOTTOM LINE IS: Go to a Surf Shop, not a computer. The pros there can give you the right answers!! get lessons, either from a pro or good friends. If you plan on just renting a board and trying on your own, do us all a favor, and stay home. There are enough dangerous people in the water already.

Good luck. Once you try surfing (and learn the 'right way') you'll have fun for life.

  5. yes, if you have a good teacher, most people can though i've meet some who were too scared to try.

It's really fun! Hope you have a good time! =)

  6. yes but it will be hard to stand up

  7. Maybe.  Depends on the waves, how big your board is and how good your balance is.  Expect to be frustrated and fall a lot, we've all been there.

  8. Ya, dude.

It should take about 3hrs for you to get the basics of it. However, you should go to the beach constantly and practise. That way you'll become amazing! :)

  9. First I would recommend getting into shape because surfing uses very specific muscles you may not be using now.

You need to do push-ups and bench presses to build your chest muscles, (pecs), so you can push yourself up to stand.

Next you need to do pull-ups or lat pull-downs to work the muscles along your sides, (lats), that you will use to paddle.

A little running will build your cardio and legs muscles.

Then I would take a couple of lessons to get the basics down.

After that it's just going to take time in the water.

I always recommend that beginners get a longboard, (at least 9' long), as these are the easiest to catch waves with and balance on to stand up.

And finally this site has a great article called 'Learn How to Surf in One Day' that I think is terrific:

Good luck and have fun!!  :-)

  10. I snow boarded, skate boarded, wake boarded, and skim boarded, before i first surfed and I got up the first time. but it depends on how athletic and ballanced you are
