Would i make a good cat owner? (buying kittens first, and i have NEVER looked after kittens!)?

Ok firstly, this is how the kittens would live:

-I work 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. would the kittens be ok by themselves for 6 hours? (brother and sister)

-Il alter them both, and they will both be inside outside cats (i have lived with cats all my life, and they have all been innies/outies and nothing has ever happened too them so no lectures please! :) ). i live in england in a quiet area (no risk of coyotees, eagles etc)

-Im in the process of buying a cat tree, cat litter box, cat litter, cat food & water bowls, cat toys, cat beds, cat collars, and cat food. Im also finding a good vet (the same vet my family has had for 29 years) anything else i should buy or do? should i get them microchipped too?

Also, basic kitten care or a website provideing kitten care would be great because as i said, i have NO experience with raising and caring for kittens, only cats :)

Thanks in advance!

  1. yes, they should be fine for 6 hours. as long as they won't eat anything dangerous they will be fine.

you may want to keep them inside as kittens, because they could very well wander off onto the road, and no one wants that to happen.

collars should be enough, they have the cat's name and phone number, and if the collar is on securely, they may be no need for microchips, but it's up to you on how worried you are about them running away. raisng kittens really isnt that much different from raising cats, you just need to be a little more careful with them! i hope this helps!

  2. the kittens will be absolutely fine! cats are independent by nature and they will have each other so lack of attention shouldn't be a problem. kittens are pretty easy- you just got to make sure they dont eat any strings in your house and close up any holes or drawers you don't want them in

  3. Oh congratulations on your great life choice!!

As long as you do try your best, you take care of them, and you alter them, you should be fine!

It's good too that you are getting bro and sis, so they wont be as nervous when you adopt them.

Make sure you put food out for them when they go outside, and don't let them before they are at least 2 to 6 months old.

This website is the best, I swear...

  4. If you plan on having them as indoor/outdoor cats then don't even get them. It doesn't matter that you grew up with indoor/outdoor cats and they SEEMED to be fine... Although there may not be harmful animals in your area you probably never thought of the other cats outdoors... with one bite or scratch your cat can contract, or spread Feline Leukemia. They can also get into fights with other cats. My cousins cat got half of her face ripped off from another cat outside. And all that could have been prevented if it was just indoors... there is NO need for a cat to be outside!

Okay, whatever... you just see what happens then. One day when your cat accidentally gets hit by a car or stolen, then you'll realize how ignorant your being... And as far as exercise goes, have you ever heard of cat toys? Apparently not.

  5. You'll be fine. Just follow these advice, please:

    1. get kittens from a shelter. Don't support the cat breeding industry, for every kitten you'll buy for a breeder another kitten will be killed in a shelter.

    2. don't let them outside until they are rather old, and they've lived with you at least a few moths, because they may get lost if they haven't learned that this is their house. And definitely don't let them outside until they have done all their vaccinations and neutering!

    3. don't panic with any problem they may have, like diarrhea etc, kittens are like kids, they have these often, but call your vet and ask for advice.

    4. de-worm them and de-flea them properly.

  6. This website is good. Look on the left and they have links with TONS of info for new cat owners, raising kittens, etc. Also answers to probably every question you can come up with:)

If you are going to let them outdoors you should definitely get them microchipped, and all their shots before you let them out. Don't let them out for a while after you get them so they don't get lost. Also the first kitten vaccinations may take a few rounds to be effective so wait till they've gotten them all before letting them out.

They should be OK 6 hrs a day. Most kittens sleep a lot during the day anyway and play at night. I think getting two is a very good idea both so they'll have company when you're gone and also it just helps them to behave better. Make sure they're at least like 10 wks old before you get them if possible- younger kittens will get behavior problems sometimes if they're taken from the mother too young.

Other stuff to buy- can't think of much. Try buying a few cheap scratching posts in different shapes/materials to see what they like- cats can be picky about that & you don't want them in the habit of scratching the furniture.

ETA- It sounds like you'd be a very good cat owner:)

  7. well you could raise a cat like that...leaving for 6 hours...but not a kitten =(

they're too vulnerable to just about everything....but if you really want to, just make sure there isnt anything around that the kittens could get stuck or jammed in.....

you shouldnt leave food or milk out...kittnes tend to just eat it all up becasue they have nothing better to do, and then they start to have tummy aches and p**p weird....believe me, i had a kitten before, and ive learned plenty =)

can you get someone to come and feed it at certain times? other than that, i think you're good to go. i LOVE kittens, they are just so adorable. make sure you give it alot of attention so it can recognize YOU throughout the years and when it gets older...good luck!! =P
