  1. CG is good.  Check out Maritime Academy's.  You'll get a taste of the regiment, without the commitment of something you may not like and in the end you'll get a sweet job makin' tons of money.

  2. dude is spot on.  There is always something that anyone can whine about in retrospect.

Personally, I've loved it, and the only thing I regret is that we get money cut from our funding much more often than the other services.  In the encyclopedia next to the definition of "Do more with less," you can find a picture of the Coast Guard seal...  and that bothers me.

We have the same general lifestyle of the othe branches of the military - junior ranking folks get crappy jobs, there is a strict chain of command, we wear uniforms, we're subject to the UCMJ (the military laws), and we all get the same pay and benefits.

On the other hand, one thing that sets us apart from the other branches are that the DOD (department of defense) services have a core mission of killng people and breaking things - no matter what their job is, they are either directly involved in the killing and breaking or they support the killers and breakers.  Their mission is to be very, very good at these things - so that when called upon, they can do it very efficiently... but the prayer is that they are so VERY good at it that the bad guys never act up, and they never HAVE to do it.

The Coast Guard's main mission is to keep people safe.  No  matter what the mission of a unit is, whether it is maintaining aids to navigation, or search and rescue or anti-migrant/drugs, or law enforcement, or maritime safety and environmental protection, the job is about keeping people safe.  Yes, there are times when we may have to use force to do our jobs, but the core mission is the same.

All in all, I think the cons to being in the Coast Guard are pretty similar to the other branches... and depend upon what you think is "good" or "bad."

    Good luck!

  3. According to someone, there's always something to regret about any branch of the military.
