  1. Depends on how long. All day? No. An hour? Probably. Much depends on the cooler itself, how you pack it, and what kind of ice you use.

Your freezer starts out at 0 degrees F, and holds it there. The cooler starts out at room temperature. You put in ice from the freezer (0 degrees), some of the ice melts in lowering the internal temperature and the surface of the cooler to 0 degrees. Melted ice is 32 degrees. From there, the ice slowly loses its cooling ability until it all melts. Your ice cream gets softer as the cooler temperature rises.

So -- start with a good quality cooler, and chill it if you can. Freeze water bottles and pack some of those in. Wrap the ice cream container with foil and put it in a plastic bag. (Wet cardboard is awful.) Pack it full of ice. Wrap the cooler in a blanket and keep it out of the sun.

Better yet, get dry ice, which is frozen CO2 and something like -109 degrees F. You can usually buy it at a grocery or ice cream store.
