Would it actually be better for the earth if more people rode the bus?

I've heard this before, but I don't know if it's true. Given the size of normal buses, and considering the amount of gas and how many times they must have to refuel, would it ACTUALLY be better for the enviroment if more people rode them to work/school instead of just driving in their own cars?

Thanks,

~~Ali. :)

  1. Buses can be more efficient, but much depends on how many people are riding the buses and how well the buses are maintained and how the routes and schedules are managed.

In many communities, buses serve another important role that most people overlook.  They provide transportation to people that can't drive for any number of reasons.  They can't afford to drive, they physically can't drive, they aren't allowed to drive, etc.

  2. Of course?

It's also better for traffic congestion, and personal finances.

  3. NO= NO FIFFERENCE

  4. Well the buses run regardless if anyone is on them or not. So if you have a full one verses an empty one obviously the full one would have less of an environmental impact. If everyone on that full bus drove that would be at least 40 more cars on the road.

  5. I know that there are some bus companies that are using the oil used in fast food restaurants to power their buses. It is helping them save a lot of money and is helping out the environment a bit. Buses may take use a lot of oil, but it is better than having everybody who rides the bus to drive their own cars. This is especially true if you work a long ways from your house. The amount of carbon emissions in the air will be reduced just a little bit if you ride the bus to work/school.

Also, some buses are upgrading to flex fuel or hybrid buses. They are VERY helpful to the environment.
