Question:

Would it affect the way my computer runs if I actually "unplug" it and all the periphials when not in use?

I would like to turn the power off at the source with one switch. I'm concerned because I have read that the computer still works even when it's off. Also, what about the modem? Isn't it supposed to be on all the time? I would love to turn it all off with an outlet bar or a "squid".

  1. If there is no power going to the computer then it's not running nor is it on.

  2. You can unplug it without harm. The modem, assuming a broadband modem, is usually set up to keep the connection alive so you don't have to log on every time you use the internet. If you don't mind the delay of having to log on before you want to go online then by all means turn it off and unplug it.

In response to your additional details, no, you need to turn your computer off via the shutdown. Don't just hit the switch on the outlet. The modem doesn't need to be on all the time. It can be turned off when you're not using it. You'll just need to reconnect to your ISP when you turn it back on and want to use the connection.
