  1. 5K is plenty for a beginner motorcycle, plus some gear.  First, though, spend $160 on the MSF course and learn to ride one.  That'll give you a chance to figure out whether it's right for you.

When you get a first bike, look for a used one.  You'll drop your first bike.  It hurts a lot less if it's pre-scratched.

  2. Instead jumping onto a motorcycle, would you consider looking at a 150 cc scooter which would sell for around $3K.  They are freeway legal, have automatic transmissions and get around 65 mpg on regular gas.  Even look into "used" scooters such as the Honda Elite.

    Good luck!

  3. No, you should be able to get a decent motorcycle for $5000. You need to decide if a motorcycle is the right thing for you, though.

  4. Truth told,

Bad idea!  If you think your bike is going to be your exclusive vehicle, you would be sorely (that works on mayn levels) mistaken.

5K will get you a (used) econobox, that will get you through the rain and snow.  It will also be PLENTY to finance a new econobox

  5. That is plenty for beginner bike.  Motorcycles are really fun.  I've been riding since 1983.  But see this:

It is also incredibly dangerous.  You have to know and respect the dangers of riding - then you don't do stupid stuff.

    Good Luck...
