Would it be a bad idea to plant a small silver pine tree next to a very large sycamore?

They would be 2 meters apart. Is this a bad idea?

  1. I would plant the pine alot further apart than 2 meters. How old are you and do you really expect to see the pine reach full maturity before you die.


  2. I think you would find the silver pine would end up deformed.

    If you look at a smaller tree growing too near a large one, you will see that it tends to grow "away" from the bigger one - so you may end up with a leaning silver pine.....  if it falls on someone, or the fence or a house, it was all your fault.  So plant it well away.

  3. Silver pine trees can eventually be 75 feet tall and 50 feet in diameter.  Pines don't do well in the shade--they need full sun.

    So, yes, it would be a poor choice to plant it closer than 25 feet from the Sycamore.

  4. It is possible to plant a silver pine next to your sycamore and have it grow, but it's going to be severely stunted with the sycamore's root system wrapping all around it.

    I would suggest planting it away from the sycamore's canopy so it gets some sun.
