Question:

Would it be a problem if I set up a HT system (that can even suffice to a large room) to a small room?

I will move shortly to Europe and would like to purchase my HT equipment from the U.S. because these stuff are far much more cheaper here. But the the thing is that the apartment and thus the room in which I will set up my prospective system are not determined yet.

The first thing I noticed about speakers is that typically manufacturers design speaker sets that have, among other things, 4, 5.25 and 6.5 inch woofers designed for small, medium and large rooms, respectively.

Theoretically, if I buy a premium set having a 3-way driver configuration (one of which is a woofer size of 6.5 inches or over) and if it turns out that I will have to use it in a very small room, would such set over-perform or something and ruin the whole experience?

Shortly, the ultimate question is: May I use a speaker set designed for medium and large rooms in a small room?

  1. yeah that should be fine.  you'd just have to keep the volume lower ;]  but i personally like knowing that theres always some extra headroom in terms of power :D

  2. no theres no such thing as having too big a system. you can just turn down the volume. you need larger speakers to get the best frequency range anyway. you just might not want to get 6 or 7 speakers. keep it at 5. but even for a small room a 6.5 inch woofer isnt too big. it really depends on your budget. ive never heard of anyone saying they wish they bought smaller speakers. :) buy the best you can afford.

  3. don't do it!!  the electrical system over there will ruin your stuff.  just buy it over there because it will be made to use over there.
