Well, I'm getting with a few friend soon, and I was just wondering, would it be alright if Vodka was my first drink? Would it be too concentrated, too much? How much should I drink, safely?

  1. my first drink was 80 proof vodka out of a water bottle... it was hard to just chug it straight.  Just get something to chase it down with.

  2. Hard liquor like vodka is just a more potent form of the alcohol in beer or wine. If you're mixing it, you should consider each shot as being about equal to a bottle of beer. Just remember that you're drinking it faster (since there's less to drink).

I assume you're underage, and that ups the risk quite a bit. The damage to your liver is going to be worse if you binge and the likelihood of you overdoing it and causing things like brain damage is higher. There are also issues with self-control and the experience to recognize signs of having drank too much.

But you're going to do it anyway. Less is better than some and none is better still.

  3. Definitely have a different drink nearby to stop your mouth/throat from burning after taking the shot.

  4. most novices find vodka a little harsh strait, unless you spend on the really expensive stuff... you probably want to flavor it with some sort of juice, but then sure!

  5. I'd second the flavoring. You may want to take a look at some of these mixed drink ideas at Liquor Live using only vodka:

Drinks in green only require vodka. Hope this helps!

  6. If you've never drank before, chances are you don't know how much you can handle. if i were you i'd stick to mixed drinks or at least something with a lower percentage of alcohol. (i'm pretty sure Smirnoff is around 30%? if not more?) If you do decide to try vodka, (especially Smirnoff), get the plain / triple distilled kind (believe me when I say the flavored kinds are disgusting!), make sure you stay hydrated (with water), make sure you eat enough, & don't over do it.

  7. If you are 21 - vodka is a safe drink.  I would try mixing it with orange juice because by itself, vodka can be a little strong.

Drinking safely would depend on your weight.
