  1. I always advocate upgrading, repairing, taking care of your old ride, even when looking for a new one.  You can never have too many bikes and you can use them for different purposes.

I have a Giant Butte I bought about 20 years ago and it's still going strong with most of the original components.  I use it for my commuter because it has the rugged MTB frame and can take some abuse.  Plus it's a lower theft risk than any of my racing bikes.

I put some street tires and newer narrower rims - and now she flies over the pavement!  Not as fast as the roadies of course, but decent enough.

Not sure what you mean about what to upgrade first... but generally it will depend on what you need it for.

I'd say if you're looking to get lighter and faster on pavement start with the tires and rims.

If she's getting up there in years save some $$$ for the components - derailure, brakes, cables, etc.

Your crankset and bottom bracket may be worth looking at next.

Then maybe some of the amenities like pedals, seat, handlebars if needed.

    Good luck!

  2. I think that it depends on what you feel your bike is not performing very well.  In part, the Rincon is a pretty good bike, but probably any major upgrade would be a big part of it's budget.

Good wheels go for 500 bucks and up, forks around 300 and up, disc brakes? if you don't have disc ready hubs, add like 100+ for hubs, and 80 per brake...  you get the idea.

But there are some things that can make a difference in feel, like probably different tires more suited for the type of riding you do, different saddle, etc..

If your bike fits and everything works, I would keep it and save for a future bike.
