  1. go to craigslist.org under jobs and under "gigs"

  2. Illegally, you could probably find someone who will hire you. It would have to be at a mom and pop bar. Legally, practically impossible. 1st off Brits are ineligible for the green card lottery (too many Brits already working in the US) and second you wouldn't qualify for an H1B visa. Bartenders aren't considered "skilled" workers.

However, you may want to rethink doing it if you plan on doing it illegally. Unless you haven't heard, there is an issue in the US with illegal immigrants (some estimates are as high as 10% of the US population is illegal). The INS is severely cracking down. If caught, you will be sent to an INS detention center. You could be there for many many months until your case comes up. At that point you will be summarily deported.

  3. Assuming that it is legal for you to work here, there is a healthy sized British population in the west village around Greenwich Street and West 11th.  Try around there.

  4. You could if you were working for example Hilton or Marriott or the Ritz Carlton and you were to transfer from the UK to here. Otherwise, not so much.

  5. Not legally.  Just as in any other country, foreign citizens in the U.S. must have a work visa to work...and that requires a contract from an employer who sponsors your work visa. So, unless you have a green card or a work visa, you would be working illegally.
