Would it be hard to find a job with a Double major (B.S.) in Biology AND Chemistry? ?

I'm double majoring in Biology and Chemistry because I just absolutely love them both. I like math...but, I don't love it.

I'm a college freshman and I was just thinking about life in 4 years... Would it be hard to find a job? I live in St. Louis. I know that several Biology or Chemistry majors have difficulty finding jobs and so they go on to get their masters or something else.

Opinions?

  1. Finding a job with just a bachelor's degree in science is difficult.  However, the degree will certainly prepare you to be a science teacher in high school.

  2. Dont do it!

Seriously as the others have said its a waste of your time a science degree.  Even if you do a PhD you are limiting yourself to a lifetime of low pay!

  3. I happen to have double-majored in biology and chemistry. I had originally looked for a job in industry with no success. It did, however, prove to be outstanding preparation for graduate school.  I'm now a professor at a major research university and very happy in my career.

Finding a job directly out of college with an arts and science degree, even a double major, is often difficult.  Your best bet may be to work as a lab technician at a university.  If you have a lot of laboratory experience, you might be able to get a technician job in industry, but it will truly be entry level.

Consider a masters degree or PhD, even if you have no plans to stay in academia.  It will broaden your horizons AND your employment possibilities.
