Question:

Would it be more beneficial for me to spend my year abroad in Ireland or England?

I'm majoring in something having to do with advertising or video editing, and double-minoring in theatre and creative writing.

My school has deals with colleges in both countries to go for my current tuition. (Free! *Does a happy No Tuition dance.*)

However, I'm not sure where to go. I don't want to have an American experience abroad, lumped in with other American students - I would like to experience the people and culture wherever I go as fully as I can, while still working towards my degree.

Any thoughts?

(I've never been to either place, but I'm going to Ireland with some friends this summer.)

  1. I may be biased, being English, but I think you may find England more beneficial. England is simply a far bigger and more diverse country. You will be able to experience several cultures, especially if you go to London. Also, good tansport links and cheap air travel will make it very easy for you to visit Ireland, and any where else in europe, whilst you are based in England.

  2. I'd say neither one. Instead, why don't you go to a place where you don't know the language ... or one where you have just begun to learn the language. That way you can take advantage of one of the greatest benefits of an exchange year -- language immersion! It's the thing that will get you the most payback!

  3. I'd say England because it has more influence over the world than Ireland.

    Though it is more expensive..

And any Europeans learning English learn British English anyways..
