Would it be ok to wear only compression shorts when swimming??

yea probably - i wear a tight pair of swim shorts, they are like compression shorts. they call them jammers. i use them for triathlons and lap swimming at the pool. you are right too, nothing else except goggles and a cap. my shorts do have extra material around the genital area - perhaps to conceal this area better. but i'll bet compression shorts would work. good luck.
