I am 18 and would like to go to school in Ireland, but would like to take a year off before starting college. My parents would be supporting me from America, so I would not have a job. Would this be possible?

  1. Yes, That sounds like an ok plan, I don't see how it wouldn't work.

    = )

  2. You would need to apply for a visa to stay in ireland for more than 6 months as a tourist, then you will need a student visa.  Since you won't need to work you may be able to .  The Only reliable source of this information will be the Embassy. Are you talking about Northern Ireland  or the Republic of Ireland.  IF it is the Republic, see site below to research visa info and get contact info for the Embassy.

  3. yes this would be possible but you would need to go through the embassy. I want to go study in America (in Harvard or Princeton) but the educational system is totally different so I would also need to go through the embassy

Here in Ireland we have a point system. you have to sit your Leaving Cert. you sit seven different subject exams, each woth 100points. when you get your results, you pick the best six to give you a max of 600 points. you then get into the best colleges based on how high you scored.

Talk to the Irish embassy and ask there about going to college here. There is some way of translating your SATs to Leaving Cert points.

And try to get into 'Trinity College Dublin'. It is the best college in Ireland and is world famous, and also, the education here in Ireland is free, it is paid for by the government. So there isnt much college fees.

  4. Of course, why wouldn't it be? The college you intend to enrol in should be able to give you any information you need.

  5. To the best of my knowledge, yes.

Foreign students have to pay increased fees, and they will bend over backwards to accommodate you!

  6. Hiya.

Go to www.cao.ie. This is the official way to apply to colleges in Ireland! (Its what they give us in highschool) This will list the courses available.

There are ways to do it, and it might actually work out cheaper than college in America!!!

What do you plan to study? Where do you want to live?

  7. College in Ireland is very different to in the US, you should be aware of that. It's much more intensive and difficult, and you go straight into your course of study, be it law, medicine, science, whatever.

As a US citizen, your tuition fees will be six thousand Euro and up per year. This doesn't include health insurance, accommodation, etc.

You should contact the CAO in Ireland about applying, try their website at www.cao.ie and you can always defer starting for a year once you've got your place.
