Question:

Would it be productive to try to become a southpaw?

I am not THAT uncomfortable fighting southpaw.

It feels different, but not like trying to throw with my left hand.

Maybe that changes when there is an opponent in your face, but my question is:

would it be worth my time trying to learn to be a southpaw as well as being an orthodox fighter?

  1. It wouldn't  hurt to learn the other stance. Though, even if you do become comfortable with southpaw, I wouldn't change to it just to gain what you may think could be a tactical advantage. I would simply continue to use the stance that you're use to using, since you know the strengths and weaknesses of it and can utilize them as you see fit. That's just me though.

The only way I would really change stances is if I'm having some sort of discomfort, like some sort of mild injury with my lead hand. Once again, that's just my opinion.

  2. I am fully ambidextrous by nature and believe it or not it is a disadvantage as I dont have a strong or weak side..ie I throw and catch equally well with both hands and kick with both feet..great for soccer squash etc.but in contact sports you need a dominant side to utilize your technique..sounds weird but I gotta fight Orthodox guys as a lefty and southpaws as a Righty..yeah Im able to do the opposite but then I have got to think about it and Im trying to say is this when you got to think you start to lose..an example for me is if I am bowling and throw with my right for a couple of games then I struggle to throw my first left as Im attuned to that stance..do what is natural and if switching is good for you go for it your a better man than me

  3. Yes, most boxers learn how to fight from both stances, this is why fighters often change stances in the middle of boxing matches, in order to better adjust to their opponents. Trust me, practice jabbing with your left for a week and you will be fine. It may feel weird now, but trust me, you'll get used to it. Try some footwork practice too in a southpaw stance, that will improve with practice also, you'll feel like a different fighter once you master both stances, which will not take you that long.
