Would it be realistic to go volunteer broke for lets say 10 years. If so, does that kind of work lend itself?

Would it be realistic to go volunteer with foreign aid or some sort of overseas volunteer work broke for lets say 10 years(more or less, I don't know). If so, does that kind of work lend itself to the possibility of having a paying job when my time was done? I have loans to pay before so this would not be something I would do right aways, but a question for some years away.
