Would it be wise to travel to mexico in search of a cheap VW Bug??

i'm in need of a cheap VW Bug and i know that Mexico has been producing them up until 2003. i live in southern cali and am in search for a cheap, reliabe, economical car so my question is would it be worth it to take a road trip to Tijuana are wherever to buy a VW Bug??

  1. No don't do it. You will have to convert the car to US standards. If you have money and time to waste then go ahead. It is a time consuming process. Search for a low cost VW in California. Once you find it all you have to do is pay the money and get it registered. You don't have to worry about adding emissions controls, getting paper work to bring it into the US, etc...Think about it - If Mexican cars were meant to be sold in the US then there would be a Mexican Car Dealership in California that sells 'Cars from Mexico!!!'. But there is no such dealership.


  2. California has the toughest smog laws in the country.

    VW bugs have gained "classic" status and are selling at record prices.

    better pick some other vehicle that hasn't gained a "cult" following.

    the ones from Mexico will not pass US pollution regulations especially in CA.
