  1. I have never seen place mats at any formal function that I've ever attended.

I would use a nice linen tablecloth for uniformity.  Place mats can look too busy.

  2. That's tacky in my opinion!

  3. Not so much tacky but 'regular' as in everyday supper.  Also, makes the tables very cluttered, causing spills more easily.

Instead of overlays, you can go with white tableclothes and colored round center doilies, usually underneath the centerpiece.

  4. Placements for a Wedding Yikes!

Your Wedding reception is technically the first formal party you are hosting as husband and wife.  Even if you are an ultra-casual couple, you do not need to treat the decor as if you were at your own kitchen table.  You just spent a gazillion dollars on your dress alone, so show a bit of formality! If you do not like the look of overlays, then keep the linens simple.  If you want a little pop on the table settings, try a different color napkin!  It is simple, but it can add just the right amount of color.

  5. As long as they go with your theme and don't look out of place or plastic type then why not? :)

  6. No, I think that's totally fine.  As long as they are coordinated with the other things, they will look nice.

  7. Use a solid color cloth tablecloth.  You can use a coordinating cloth napkin in the center to put your centerpieces on, or a pretty doily, or nothing extra at all.  Personally, I find that  place mats and tablecloths don't coexist very well on the table at the same time.

If you're not using tablecloths at all, then use a place mat.

  8. I think it depends on the placemats, but if they're pretty and match your other decorations, there's no reason not to use them. You don't absolutely have to use overlays.

  9. No, the tables will look too busy. Just use a nice linen tablecloth.
