If i kept a hammer in the front glove compartment, would it be of any use if i got into an accident and got stuck in the car? What tool would actually help?

  1. A spring-loaded center punch used for marking a drilling point on metal is all you need to shatter a door or back glass and they are small enough to fit in a glove box or console bin. Hardware stores usually carry them. A lot easier than swinging  a hammer and less bulky. A know a few fire rescue/paramedic guys that carry them for emergencies plus a good strong serrated knife for cutting seat belts and a small fire extinguisher.

  2. I doubt it.  If you can't get yourself out of the car chances are you can't swing the hammer.  The belt cutting tools are for the paranoid type.

I would suggest you keep your cell phone close by and charged.  That's the best tool in your car.

  3. They make a special seat belt cutter. That would come in handy if you roll and get stuck upside down. A steering wheel lock might help open a door also.

    I prefer a 9MM auto. though.

  4. Check on ebay and get a life hammer or a glass punch.

  5. if you mean like a construction hammer, then... maybe a little, but there's better options. If you mean a safety hammer that's used to shatter the glass in the event your car is sinking, then it wouldn't hurt. just make sure it has the seat belt cutter on the other end (most of them do).
