  1. I assume you mean natural gas fired...

Part of this answer relies on where you are. I can give you a definite answer for Canada, but if you are in the US or elsewhere, the legal side of what I'm about to tell you may be different...

The appliance should have a rating plate on it. This plate will state the fuel to be used, the btu's and operating pressure, and who the manufacturer is. You will need to contact that manufacturer to find out two things...Is it convertible, and what parts etc. are needed to do that. If they will provide both of these things, you are away to the races! Install the conversion kit and new rating plate, attach a suitable regulator and you're done.

If they respond negatively, game over! It cannot be legally converted. If you go ahead and alter the appliance and somebody is hurt or property is damaged by it, you will be liable, and insurance companies will not cover you for losses!

The only other possibility is to try and get what is called a "field approval" of the appliance once the necessary work is completed. This is an expensive process! The Technical Safety Standards Authority oversees this type of thing in Ontario. Typically you would be looking at somewhere between $500 and $1500 if everything went smoothly to get a burner converted with minimal work and get it approved. Once it meets all of the safety criteria and passes their tests, they will issue you a rating plate and you can legally use it.

Don't take short-cuts on this, it's not worth it! There is 20 years experience as a gas fitter and a trainer to the propane industry behind my statement.  Good Luck with it!
