  1. Less than a block from King Street, downtown's central shopping district, is Andolini's, (4) 82 Wentworth Street, (843) 722-7437, a funky restaurant that far too many tourists pass up. Its walls are covered with pictures of anything from the Kennedy family to Jesus, the dreadlocked employees are laid back, and the prices are reasonable. A great deal to feed the whole family is one of their huge New York-style pizzas, which start at $12.95. Dinner for a family of four is about $25, without soda, beer or wine, which are all available.

Seafood and Forrest Gump lovers will enjoy the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, (5) at 99 South Market Street, (843) 723-5665. The restaurant is decorated with paraphernalia from the movie, and midway through your meal your waitress, with no prompting, will spout movie trivia. The shrimp po' boy, a sandwich of popcorn shrimp with rémoulade sauce ($8.99) is a huge hit with shrimp lovers, and your Ping-Pong-paddle menu includes the delicious chocolate chip cookie sundae ($5.99).

As a waterside city, Charleston offers many other popular seafood restaurants. Hyman's Seafood and Aaron's Deli, (6) 215 Meeting Street, (843) 723-6000, features the Three Item Combo, a make-your-own-meal deal ($15.95), and the crispy flounder ($14.95).

    A. W. Shuck's, (7) 70 State Street in the Market, (843) 723-1151, sits in a former warehouse and illegal saloon. Its two most popular dinner meals are the stuffed shrimp ($14.99) and the seafood casserole ($14.79).

Hank's Seafood Restaurant, (8) also in an old warehouse at 10 Hayne Street, (843) 723-3474, features a grilled mahi mahi and a rare seared tuna, each for $22.95.

Jestine's Kitchen, (9) 251 Meeting Street, (843) 722-7224, is the definition of Southern cooking. Delicious home-style dishes like the fried pork chop ($7.95), fried chicken ($8.95), macaroni and cheese and green beans ($1.70 each), are brought out quickly by friendly and efficient waiters. Lemon custard and chocolate Coca-Cola cake are among the mouthwatering desserts ($4.50 each). Get there early or wait in the line out the door. Closed Monday.
