  1. Johnny can learn read or learn the Marshall Gambit.

Gee, why do I, a retired chess tutor, pick against chess?:)

  2. You want chess taught as a subject at schools, or to have schools meant just for chess?

I don't see that ever happening. It's true that chess can sharpen the mind and takes a lot of skill, but there's nothing actually educational about it. Schools are meant to teach knowledge and facts, not to delve into the abstract. I can't imagine anyone making it into a class, or it becoming a government-paying job outside of schools.

But I do agree that children could gain a lot from learning games like chess. It should definitely be supported in after-school programs and in school clubs. I know that the American Go Association provides some funding to hire Go teachers and to supply Go equipment to schools. So I'm sure there's something similar available for chess players. You should look into it, if you're interested in supporting chess in schools - that'll probably be your best bet for helping out.

  3. Facts:

    4. Chess has value to a wide range of people who play unlike all of the literature that is pumped into kids in high school.

    5. Chess is the same all over the world and where ever one goes they can play regardless of language and customs.
