I'm not interested in partying but I dont want to be in the middle of nowhere. We are both not Brits and since this is a surprise I have no idea where to go. I would like agood base ideally from where I can travel with a ferry or train to other locations during the day...is that possible? Is it a good idea to go to Cornwall without a car or should I consider another place? What can i do there? How is lands end?

  1. Go to St. Ives, Loo or new quay- great weather in the summer- was sunny blue skies most of the time- gotta love the british weather.

There is loads of things to do- surfing, diving or just walk around town- beachy, safe & lovely restaurants along the sea side. Cozy pubs not to mention the home of pasties (meat pies) and cornish ice cream- divs!

Im from America, was one of my favorite places to visit- moderately expensive.

  2. Tricky:

I'd tend to say go all the way to Penzance.

It's big enough to provide almost everything you need in the town but has, as well as its rail link which will get you there (if you don't use a long distance coach), a good set of bus services that will get you to Land's End, Mousehole, St Ives...

I'd say it's easier to be in Penzance and visit St. Ives, than be based at St. Ives and try to see other places.

Newquay is not so far down the peninsula, has lots of attractions, and is well connected for buses, but is very crowded and touristy in season.

Most of the towns/cities with good transport links aren't necessarily the ones to give the best flavour of rural Cornwall.

Which I why I arrived at the suggestion of Penzance.

And Land's End?  Worth seeing despite the overdone tourist development.

(The Minack theatre and Porthcurno, south of Land's End, are more unspoiled and possibly more spectacular)

  3. Visit South Wales, the scenery is prettier, there are many quiet beaches, great fresh local food, brilliant and friendly pubs. You could stay in Cardiff and do the big city thing and then get on the train and visit beauty spots, castles etc. It is a very romantic part of Britain too and the Welsh are very friendly, laid back people who are welcoming to visitors, not something I found on the occastions I visited cornwall. They don't seem to like tourists but can't live without them, and they hate it. Where as in Wales I had loads of fun. You can Party or relax and it is cheaper too. Cardiff if quite cheap consideing it is a capitol city and outside of Cardiff is very cheap. You could also be based in Cardiff for your stay and travel to other cities such as Liverpool for the day via train. West Wales is gorgeous.

Hope you and your boyfriend have a good time where ever you go.
