  1. Most sushi's are made with some type of rice...you might want to try Sashimi Sashimi is thinly sliced, raw seafood. Many different kinds of fish (and other types of seafood) are served raw in the Japanese cuisine. Of course, the fish has to be as fresh as possible. Sashimi can be eaten just as sashimi or as nigiri zushi, in which case the sashimi piece is put on top of a small ball of sushi rice.

  2. Then you need to try sashimi. Basically sushi with no rice!

  3. you probably arent into sushi, sashimi, etc. at all then.  The rice (generally sushi is made with Koshihikari rice), is the main ingredient in sushi.  sashimi is  just the raw filets of fish, very very uncomfortable to eat for the first time if you have any reservations about trying new foods, or dont like strange unfamiliar textures, etc.

Id say, give it a try from a grocery store first, and if you like it, then go to a restaurant.  Sushi restaurants can be very expensive and you may hate everything you try, to test it out with a cheaper grocery store version first.

  4. If you do not like the rice then sushi is not for you.

Here are your choices from most to least rice.

Cut rolls: these are rolled with rice and are then cut into small bites.

Hand rolls: These look almost like an ice cream cone. They do contain some rice.

Nigiri: These are not rolled and are the raw fish with a small amount of rice on the bottom. You could discard the rice on these (unless it is all you can eat and they have a rule about that.)

Sashimi-This is just thinly sliced fish with no rice and is technically not sushi.

The word sushi refers to the rice and not the fish and in fact can be filled with just about anything not just fish. In fact there is such a thing as sushi made with chicken and even Spam!

  5. If you don't like fish, can't fathom eating raw fish - then skip the sushi idea.  If you don't like sushi rice, then you want sashimi - that's just the fish.

Some supermarkets sell sushi, but you don't have a choice of what's in it.  Usually it's a weird California type roll with fake crabmeat.

If you like salmon and you like shrimp - try those at a restaurant.  The shrimp is not raw, and sometimes the salmon isn't either, depending on the salmon.  Yellowfin tuna is also good as sashimi.   Don't worry about being embarrassed.  Go someplace that you can order sushi/sashimi by the piece and you can see what you like.  Go with someone who does like sushi and sashimi (like me!), who can eat what you won't/don't and can help explain what things are.  If you end up chickening out on trying sashimi, you can always order some tempura or teriyaki... but you'll never know until you try it, and the stuff in the supermarkets does not compare to a good sushi restaurant.

  6. salmon sushi

  7. Sushi is the rice; how the rice is prepared, 90% of Sushi will have rice.

    Sashimi is the Raw fish.

  8. All sushi has rice.
