Question:

Would maggots be good for the soil?

There are maggots in my trash bin, swimming in some nasty looking gunk... Some gross stuff must have spilled out of a bag into the bin last week, so I definitely need to clean it out.

I was thinking, would that be good for the soil, and should I wash it out over my grass?

Or would it be harmful to my grass, and should I just clean it out in the streets?

  1. Maggots are the larvae of the common house fly. Do some cleaning of your garbage can.

  2. Bring the barrel out to the driveway and use a hose and nozzle to get the majority of the gunk out. Then use an old broom, detergent and water and complete the cleaning, rinse with the hose.

  3. Yeah, no. Maggots would just eat whatever plants you have in your soil. By the way, clean your garbage bin outside and not on grass. It'll also make the grass stink like crazy!

  4. Earthworms would be better.

  5. I understand your thinking, but I don't think you want the stink...trust me!  I suggest you just use some good old earth worms.  As for cleaning the trash can take it to a paved area or gravel and start rinsing it out with water, don't blast the water on the little guys or you will find yourself wearing them...OOOOHHH!  Just add some water and then turn the trash can over to drain them out.  Once you think they are all rinsed I suggest you take a couple cups of bleach and pour on the sides and bottom and then add water to about half way and allow to sit in the sun for a couple hours.  Then dump and rinse and you will have a nice smelling trash can.

  6. Sure, but something will probrably eat them before there protiens can be beneficial to your garden, maybe bury them.
