I enjoy the technical aspect of computer a lot and I'm just wondering if majoring in computer science would be a wise choice if I wanted a decent living. Does anyone have any info about their view on working with a computer science degree? Salary estimation would be helpful too. Thanks

  1. Analyze what you would be doing in a job using your degree and then ask yourself, "can this be outsourced to India?"  If not, it's a good major.

  2. If you don't mind working long hours to meet looming deadlines and sitting in a cubical all day crunching code, then it'd be fine for you.

I started out wanting to get a Computer Science degree because I liked programming, but I ended up with a career as a manager of an IT department/help desk.  I'm glad I ended up down that path.  Some of my friends who went the programming route are now jealous that I get to be at home during the evenings and weekends and don't have too many deadlines to worry about.

  3. Absolutely. And you'd definitely earn a good living.

  4. Only if you are passionate about computers. There are too many people with degrees who are not passionate about computers and who are useless to an employer ans drag down the average salary.

If you are passionate, yo can make $50K to $125K. Ifr you are not passionate, you will make between $0 and $30K.

  5. everyone is  a backyard computer expert these days

  6. I think that the best thing of having a computer science degree is the ability of finding a new job quickly, if you don't like your new boss, then quit and find a new job, as easy as that !! Despite the economy, outsourcing, etc etc, people with a computer science degree are in high demand. Salaries for a BS start at 50k ( I suppose you live in USA), for a MS you can get 65k. If you ever reach a top position as manager of an IT Department, you can get a maximum of 120k, but it depends on the company. Or you can be a consultant if you specialize in an exotic skill, like SAP for instance. Or you can even take some risks and start your own company, if you are successful, you'll see seven figures in your bank account.
