  1. No. I here tell the best thing to do is play dead. I would not wanna be in that position. You could not out run it and bears can climb. Your only chance is an eye poke and run. How about some dirt in the face if you can get it. Remember if captured chances are you might be killed. Also if its a grizzly ,brown or polar you better have some very good life insurance.

  2. if you were a heavyweight boxer, that's the only way i see fending of a bear. awesome punches in bunches to it's face.

  3. Anything involving a large calibre firearm, a spear, a baseball bat, or a large bladed weapon like a katana or a machete.  Plus enough training so that you don't freeze up in that situation.  You didn't specify unarmed, so I'm coming "loaded for bear".

Grizzly bears have a top speed of 35 mph, and the best human top speed is just under 30 mph, so trying to outrun one is a bad idea.  Even though bears are mostly vegetarian, they are omnivorous, and it's unwise to act like food

  4. No. Training to fight one or more human is completely different than learning how to fight a wild animal. If you do martial arts a lot then you're probably in pretty good shape so you can run supa fast. Best thing to do when confronted by a bear is either to play dead or try to intimidate it. Puff out your chest, make an angry face and make angry noises at the bear, and stand your ground. I know it sounds retarded/suicidal but that's how I've been told how to do it by park rangers.

  5. only play dead if its a grizzly bear because when they think your dead they burry you because they like food better when it decomposed but brown or black bears its no good cause they'll eat you right away martial arts isn't gonna help you though it'll just p**s them off more

  6. Nope, won't help...it engages the bear in an attack...best to carry a weapon through areas with bears...and learn how to avoid them completely...if surprised by one...of course use the weapon...if there is no weapon...try to play dead...but their are no guarantees.  :-)

  7. A good Katana might help, but  a .308 or 30 06 at 100 meters is better

  8. If you were a black belt or something it would. You'd be better off trying to run away or climb a tree though.

  9. Athleticism would help the escape and a pain threshold might prevent you from panicking.  Martial arts builds those qualities so indirectly, sure it would help against a bear.

I don't think that that any black belt, prize fighter, special forces guy or any other human is going to fight a bear other than a koala bear and win without some serious weaponry, but it might give them the quickness of mind and body to be elusive.
