Would my 2 cats be okay with one litter box rather than 2?

I'm moving into a small condo, and I only have room for one box... right now they have 2... I'm afraid if I only go down to one they may have an accident, which I really can't have in this new carpeted condo.... or how about this auto litter box cleaners? Any advice about those?

  1. One litter box is fine for two cats.  Just keep about 4 inches of litter in the box at all times and scoop it out daily.  Wash the box and buy fresh litter about once a month.  Fresh Step is the best cat litter, in my opinion.  It's a little more expensive, but worth it.

Never had an automatic litter box, I thought it might scare my kitty! :)

  2. I agree with Heather about the auto litter box cleaners being a joke and not being worth the money.  One litter box should be fine if you are able to take the extra time cleaning it.  We use a 10 gallon rubber maid tub full of litter for our 2 cats and it works perfectly, you can't even tell we have cats when you walk in the house.  Another way that may "cut down" on messes is to get your cats either spayed or neutered and also make sure they have a healthy diet.  Good luck :)

  3. one large box (it has to be large aor extra large) will be okay as long as you make certain you keep it clean at all times.  i happen to have two persians and i use a littermaid (auto) box for my girls.

the only drawback with them is the cost of the waste receptacles. some people reuse them (which may be the "green" thing to do) but i find them unsanitary to reuse.

they do sell a special device that makes it possible to use those plastic bags you get from shopping instead of the containers. it is not made by the littermaid people but fits their boxes. you can find it in the back section of cat fancy magazine or on the catchannel.com website.

  4. Each cat needs his/her own box otherwise they may feel they are competing for resources, food, love and space. This will make your cats fight and unable to live together.

  5. It's fine, you just have to clean it more, and you may want to take it down to 1 now while you're still where you are to get them used to sharing or what have you.

  6. I had one box, 2 cats.  Mine was automated, and it worked okay.  I don't think it was worth the money, since cleaning it was alot more of a pain then just cleaning the litter box daily.  They are only nice if you are leaving the cats for more than a day at home alone.

  7. I have 3 cats using one large box.  the most important thing is to clean it constantly.

when I was using a small one I cleaned it 2x a day... and more if it needed it.

I tried the water sand box and because my cat are older they wouldn't use it except to pee in.  I sent it back

You might try the toilet training method... works great for some.

    good luck >^..^<

  8. One box is fine for your kittys, however, it will require cleaning more often, obviously. The auto cleaner ones are a joke and not at all worth the cost.

  9. When i had 2 cats I needed 2 litter boxes or 1 would go on the floor behind the T V so I would say you need 2 litter boxes

  10. I have always had one box for 2 cats--no problem.  Just keep it clean and it should be fine.  I have not heard positive things about the auto cleaners.  My friend had 2 (one broke) and they just don't work as promised.  A good scoop is better.
