I have a four cylindar automatic 90 camry. Im thinking about taking to mexico to drive around there for a year. I would be travelling from Zacatecas to Oaxaca. Do you think it could last? It has 170,000 miles on it, new timing belt, no engine problems.

  1. Hi...I live in Mexico and have total faith in Mexican mecanicos.  They can fix ANYTHING for super cheap prices...old cars are their speciality.  Do NOT look for fancy repair shops with nice signs..the dinky litte, tiny shops are GREAT.  So, yes, c'mon.  I am sure your car will break down a few times...but you need to have a Mexican outlook on that. Do not get upset and fret...don't worry that your "schedule" is going to be messed up...just relax and let the mecanico do his work. It is cheap...and he will probably take you home for supper.     You will see shabby little signs that say "Taller...mecanico"  along the roads...means "Workshop...mechanic."  If your car actually reaches the end of its very long life...no problem.  The bus system in Mexico is excellent and the buses are VERY nice.  You can go anywhere on the bus...and return to the states too.  Just buy a Guia Roji, the Mexican road atlas at a book store or from Amazon.com , and come have a grand adventure.  your tourist visa is only good for 6 months, so you would need to go back over the border for a day, then return .  Be sure to tell the border guared you need the full 180 days on your tourist card.  You will need a Mexican car permit and car ins.  See web sites below...the ins. one is my fav.place...very cheap.
