Yes. EF lenses just have a larger opening than EF-S lenses. EF-S lenses are made for APS-C sensors (which the 40D has) and EF lenses are made for full frame cameras.

You can use a full frame EF lens on an EF-S camera with no problem, but using an EF-S lens on an EF camera will give you black bars on top and bottom due to clipping in internal mechanics.

EF-S lenses are cheaper, because the dont require a lot of mechanics and they also have a wider range of zoom, because you can fit more optics in a full frame barrel when you do not require a full frame image.

Nikon has the same system with DX and FX lenses and cameras.

    machanical is spelled mechanical.

A film scanner would do the trick. I use a Nikon SuperCoolscan 5000. The problem is you have to make sure you dont get a dud, which can be tested scanning a color slide taken indoors with flash. If the whites blur, then you have a dud and return it immediately, or it will require costly repair, since Nikon has very POOR customer service, and this isnt covered under warranty even though they have failed to deliver the product as advertised under implied warranty laws.
