  1. If they scratched the pads when cleaning out the hooves it might be sore for a while.

  2. its going to be supected that even if she hasnt seen a farrier walking on the gravel will make her seem very sore or stiff(like she's walking arthritic because of the pressure it puts on the feet

if she doesnt have shoes on and just got her feet trimed her feet are probably still soft creating discomfort when she walks on the jagged surface. did you or didnt she get shoes on is what matters. and if she did she isnt going to instantly get better she may be sore for a few days

because of it being new and unconfortable for her.

i hope this was some help.best of luck if you have any questions feel free to ask.

  3. It is possible for her hoofs to be a sore after a trim. This should not, however, be a perpetual problem. (In other words if she is sore after every trim.) Many times this has to do with a number of conditions. If it is dry in your area her soles may be wearing down without much trimming and the recent trim made them more sensitive.  It could also indicate that your horse needs to be trimmed more often (yes i said more). in doing this less will be taken off each time and there will be less chance to expose the sensitive tissues.

If she stays sensitive for more than a couple of days, let your farrier know so that he (or she) can make the proper adjustments for the next trim.  If this becomes a habitual problem that your horse is lame for days after each trim then I would talk with your vet or decide if you either wanted to go with shoes or with a farrier that specializes in barefoot horses. There are many different techniques that can be appropriate for situation like this.

I hope this helped and did not add any confusion or worry to you. Feel free to contact me if you need any clarification.

  4. u dont have shoes. thats all, most horses' hooves hurt walking on gravel without shoes. shoes pprotect their hooves so they dont hurt. since u dont have them on her, her feet are getting hurt. its like u going and walking on gravel barefooted. it hurts doesnt it? try bring the farrier back out and sees what's up and the farrier might have also trimed her too short.!!

  5. How would you like to walk, barefooted, on th gravel??

Why didn`t you put shoes on your horse, when he was at the blacksmith shop?

On th other hand, if you are thru racing, or showing, for th year,  any horse, acts alittle soar, especially, walking on gravel.

  6. Yeah. But thats not cause she saw the ferrier, all horses hate gravel, it hurts the frog.

  7. My horse goes barefoot, we mostly have sandy-type soil.

My farrier is really good at a barefoot trim, and has been trimming her for years.

A few months ago she was  trimmed, and was still in the sandy soil - she began limping on one of her forefeet.

within four days she was fine, back to normal.

Even a professional farrier can cut a little deep sometimes - gravel will just make it all the more evident.

You might consider some of those rubber boots for barefoot horses - they really sound like they could help in rough terrain or (forbid!) when the farrier trims a little close.

Farriers are human, too - I still like mine.

  8. When the Farrier does his job right the horse should not be lame at all after a trim. It could be that he was cut a little short once in a while. If your horse is lame after each visit from the Farrier the I would look for a new Farrier. I see many people talking about hurts to walk on gravel, or it hurts the frog but the truth is that: any part of the hoof that you can see or touch with your hand is called a horny structure. And it is free from nerves so no pain in walking unless it gets cut past the horny structure and down into the live sole. that can happen but should not happen every time the Farrier comes. Shoes do help but think of all the wild horses out there that never see a Farrier let alone were shoes, they do fine. (they prob need to see a Farrier but don't have money to pay for one)

All in all if your horse is lame after each visit the look for a new Farrier.

    BTW

I am a certified Farrier my self and do many trims, barefoot trims and put on many shoes,

  9. I assume you called your farrier right back and asked him/her? But your not understanding their answer.Small gravel should not be a problem if it gives and scrunches a bit. Stones and rocks might hurt her since she is unshod, but with her this sensitive and having a hard time, something is wrong. A fresh trim does expose new hoof horn, but it is not right to be in pain from any farrier work.

Something from too close a trim to laminitis or funicular is going on,and a few phone calls will make you both feel better.

Remember, it is the goal of your farrier to relieve and prevent pain not cause it!
