whether my policy included payment in the event of suicide? they previously said i have no exclusions (its a terminal illness cover & covers u upon death) but i find it hard to believe they would pay on suicide. the question was raised as it came up in conversation once regarding a friends dads suicide, so it made me wonder in general if insurers paid out (my insurance tends to exclude everything it seems) so i was just wondering. would the insurers think i was weird if i asked them? wud they raise my premiums thinking i was suicidal or something silly like that? i dont care if they think im weird as long as they dont think im suicidal & raise my premiums lol ta

  1. Suicide along with death caused by use of alcohol and drugs as well as being in warzones are all exclusions used in life insurance policies. Policies do differ but just remember that risk is the enemy of insurance and insurers are a bit like bookies in many respects, the odds are always stacked in their favour.

  2. you already have the policy.  So pull it out and look for a suicide exclusion.  Many life policies have a 2 year period.  After that there is no exclusion.

If you can't find your policy call and ask for a review of your coverage and ask about this.  Also ask what it would take to get a new policy (there may be a fee to print and mail it)

Another option is to go and see a local broker who might be able to recommend a better product with less exclusions.

    Just my 2cents

  3. Read your policy.  Some do some don't

  4. They wont pay out on suicide.

  5. I actually work at a life insurance company and know for a fact that suicide is not going to be covered because it is an intentional act.  If you asked it would not raise your rates or anything like that, and believe me we get questions like that all the time.  I would probably just check your policy and you will see suicide excluded it you really want to hear it from the horses mouth, I would give your insurance company a call, but I will guarantee you 100% it is not covered because it is an intentional act.

  6. It seems most life insurance companies have a suicide clause which states that they will NOT pay if you commit suicide within two years of getting your policy.

  7. Every policy is different so read yours carefully - most cover suicide after a 2 year period - so as to deter an individual from purchasing a policy and then committing suicide immediately after it is purchased.

  8. insurance companies have clauses that dont pay out in the event of suicide.

  9. FYI - If an insurance company suspects suicide or questions cause of death, there's an autopsy clause in most policies that allows the company to order an autopsy, at their expense.

  10. You can read the policy and find out for yourself.  All policies have some type of suicide exclusion.

  11. Read the policy, look for where it says "Suicide-exclusions: or something to this effect.

Some policies will not cover suicide at all, others will not if it occurs during the first 2 yearsof the policy. If it doesn';t answer your question, call them!

  12. Individual policies usually cover it after the policy has been in force for two years.  You can see the suicide clause in the policy.

Most group insurance doesn't cover it because if the company bought the policy in 2005 and hired you today you'd be covered under their group contract.  So, excluding for two years wouldn't work because the policy has already been in force for two years.

Either read the policy or call and ask.  They can't do anything to the premium because you asked a question about how the policy works.
