Would our economy be a lot better off if the NAFTA contract had a clause?

Like a clause that would allow all free trade of products, but not free trade of jobs.

What I mean is, corporations can buy products from existing companies overseas, but not allow companies to build facilities on foreign soil and transport employment opportunities from one country to another.

  1. Not sure which economy is "ours", but I suspect the answer is no in any case.

If one country allowed imports, but not investment in another country, it not only has the potential to lose the local production, but the local company also loses the potential to make a profit in the other nation.

  2. what about the foreign companies that locate in the US and employ Americans?  Toyota, Honda, Siemens, for example.  You can't have it both ways.
