I have the front speakers from an 05 and am thinking about swapping them out with the front factory speakers in my 99 civic since they are the same size. Even though theyre still factory speakers too do you think since they are 6 years newer they will sound significantlly better in quality? And the cd unit in the 99 civic is still factory.

Also, when i do go to swap them will i need to buy some special type of wire harness to install them? I wouldnt think so since they are the same size but since theyre out of a different year model im not so sure. thanks

  1. Unless the older speakers are damaged and starting to crackle or distort, then I wouldn't expect any significant improvement from replacing them with newer stock-quality speakers.

I also wouldn't be certain that the newer speakers will fit easily into the older car.  If I recall correctly, the speakers in the newer Civic are specially shaped to fit the door.  They're technically the same size, but in reality I don't think you'd have an easy time mounting them in the older vehicle.  Usually I have to use a spacer bracket when installing front speakers in a newer Civic; that's not necessary on the older ones, although I often have to cut away some plastic to make more room.

In my opinion, if you're looking for a sound quality improvement you'd be better off with after-market replacements.  The speakers are the weak point of most stock audio systems, whether in a 99 or an 05 vehicle.
