Would radio be ok without the RJ's?

On a rare weekend, I listened to one hour of just songs, no blab, and it was GOOD. Why do they have RJ's on to blab endlessly between songs? Does market research show that this helps listeners in some way? Some days its just frustrating to listen to some person yammering away when I just want to get to work or someplace else with the original reason why I listen to the radio - for some music! to hear some of my favourite songs.... like it was in the old days, when you just had one night with a special RJ who would dedicate songs to people from their secret crush. That was it, and the rest was just music.
