  1. Some can be useful.  For example, in some probes of Moon rock and meteors it's been possible to determine an age of approxiamately 4.6 billion years, and that indicates the age of the solar system.  As the Earth was formed at the same time, that in turn gives the age of the planet.  All known Earth rock that's been dated is younger than that.

    There are lots of different materials, and generalizing about them in this way would be unwise.  Their half-lives happen to differ from one another, with some being very short.


  2. Carbon isotopes as far as I know as all organic substances contain carbon.
