  1. Most poker variations have several things in common.

    HOW DOES THE GAME WORK?

You look at some of your cards then make a bet.

You look at more of your cards and make another bet.

You look at more of your cards then make another bet.

You look at your final cards, make the final bet.

Then everyone shows their cards, and the best cards wins the money.

    WHAT MAKES A GOOD HAND?

There are two types of poker hands:

    1) hands where all 5 cards work together.

    2) cards that match

All 5 cards work together is one of three types of hands, a "straight", a "flush", or a "straight flush".

Straight - all 5 cards run in order, such as 4-5-6-7-8, or 8-9-10-J-Q.

Flush - all 5 cards are of the same suit, such as all hearts.

Straight flush - it's both a straight, and a flush, and is the highest hand in the game.

For the other hands, they all come down to having cards that match.  The more matches, the better the hand.  If they have the same number of matches, the higher matched cards win.

Lowest: NO PAIR, or HIGH CARD, such as K-8-5-4-2. The highest card wins, so K-8-5-4-2 beats Q-J-10-9-7, because the king is the highest card.  If they're both the same, then go to the second highest, etc. A-K-9-8-4 beats A-K-9-8-2.  It's only a tie if all 5 cards are the same.

Next: ONE PAIR, such as 7-7-K-4-3, "a pair of 7s".  In this case, a pair of 7s beats a pair of 6s, regardless of the other three cards.  And 7-7-A-4-3 beats 7-7-K-Q-J.

Next: TWO PAIR, such as K-K-5-5-8, "kings up".  Here, K-K-5-5-8 beats Q-Q-J-J-A, because the kings are the highest pair.

Next: THREE OF A KIND, OR A SET, OR TRIPS.  5-5-5-K-J, "three fives", which beats "three fours" and beats all the two pair and one pair hands.

Next: STRAIGHT.  2-3-4-5-6, a "six-high straight".  Note that aces are high, except for 5-4-3-2-A, which is a straight, and is the lowest straight.

Next: FLUSH.  All the same suit.

Next: FULL HOUSE.  A lot more matches.  6-6-6-4-4.  In case both have a full house, the higher set wins, so 7-7-7-2-2 beats 6-6-6-A-A.

Next: FOUR OF A KIND. 2-2-2-2-A.  Again, four threes beats four twos.

Next: STRAIGHT FLUSH. I mentioned it earlier.

Finally: ROYAL FLUSH. The highest straight flush: A-K-Q-J-10 in the same suit.  Since that specific combination is the highest hand in poker, it gets it's own name.

Last: FIVE OF A KIND. It's only possible if you're playing with a joker (3-3-3-3-jo), or a stacked deck.

In the Old West days, they didn't use straights or flushes or jokers, so the best hand was four of a kind.  And so:

"A Smith and Wesson beats four aces"
