Why is it that it seems that so many people who oppose abortion also oppose promoting the use of contraception?

Although I am pro-choice I can respect the difference of opinion on the issue of abortion.

What I don't understand is why so many also oppose contraception. Wouldn't make sense to prevent the pregnancy from happening in the first place?

I understand that there a certain religious beliefs oppose contraception, but practical reality is that people have s*x (at least 7 billion times in the last 80 years) so why not give them the means to prevent unwanted pregnancies?

I am genuinely looking for cogent arguments not ranting please

  1. I am Pro-Life and I have no problem with using contraception's.  That said there is no known contraception that is 100% effective, and I believe that a person has already made their choice when they decide to have s ex.  If a person is not ready for the responsibility of their choices then they should not make those choices.

I was once on the Pro-choice side but entered the medical field of Neonatology and had an epiphany.  One day a Mother that desperately wanted to have a baby came into the hospital in active labor.  She was only 14 weeks gestation and we could not stop her labor.  So she delivered what many would call a fetus, but this fetus was alive and struggled so hard for the little time that he had on this earth.  He lived for 4 hours and the Mother got to hold him and love him.  I held him for 2 hours myself and watched as his little hand grasped my finger and how he struggled to breath.  In the end there was nothing I could do to save this child.  Yes I say child because this was not a fetus he was alive and in that instant he touched my soul and changed my life.  No more could I condone the ki lling of inno cent children!

Sorry if this is long but it does my heart some good to tell this very true story, that happened to me.

  2. Most anti-abortion people support the use of contraceptives. They just don't support people going around having s*x with whoever they want, getting someone pregnant or if it's a woman, getting pregnant and then killing a  baby. Few exceptions are ultra-religious people. They are against contraceptives. Most anti-abortion people are not ultra-religious. They might believe in god, but that alone does not make them ultra religious.

  3. Because the issue is not nor ever has been about abortion. Countries where abortion is illegal actually have higher abortion rates than we do. The problem is s*x. Conservatives don't want anybody having s*x before they're married, and when they do, only to create babies. They revolve their lives around a code of laws written for a desert tribe thousands of years ago and expect the rest of us to do the same.

  4.    I don't think that's necessarily true. If the majority of people felt that way the population of the US would be triple what it is. Although our birthrate has gone up slightly, it has remained fairly stable over the last several decades.I do believe, however, that for a variety of reasons, people profess one thing while practicing another. The Catholic faith does not approve of birth control or abortion. If all Catholics followed this, there would be millions more children in Catholic families.Other religions have similar dogma. I am pro-choice, although I'm against abortion because it has become a method of birth control instead of a medically advisable procedure. And, with so much available for birth control, pregnancy is totally avoidable. Further, the expenditure of tax monies solely for the purpose of enabling someone to terminate what was avoidable in the first place is suspect.
