  1. the meniscus is a pad of cartilage in your knee. it is the cushion between your femur (thigh bone) and your tibia (shin bone). many, many things can result in a meniscus tear. its one of the most common orthopedic injuries in the US. it is often not related to a traumatic event. it just kind of wears away over time. other times, it is associated with a fall or collision. treatment is usually a simple surgery. because cartilage can't really heal, the solution is to remove the piece of the meniscus that has been damaged. its done via two or three small incisions about the size of a nickel.  a camera goes in one whole; the instruments go in the other two. it only takes about 45 minutes for the operation. recovery involves about a week on crutches followed by 4-6 weeks of limited activity and sometimes physical therapy.

    hope this helps.
