I'm 15 and am really interested in journalism as a future career, I am currently in the achievers english class at school and generally do well in English. I would howether like to further my writing skills (as I realise they're essential for journalism) and was wondering if starting a blog would be a good way to do this. I would also like to do what sites I can use to start my blog, preferbly one in which people who know what their talking about would give me feedback on my writing. Any other suggestions you have as to how to improve my writing would also be much appreciated.

  1. I should think so as long as you use correct grammer and no slang (eg. Gr8)

  2. Yes! Writing every day can you help perfect your writing style and also is very enjoyable and fulfilling. Try livejournal.com or blogger.com

  3. Yes, if you:

    Spend quality time on it.

Think of ways to interest and maintain your audience.

Don't succumb to randomness or ranting, which is common in blogs.

Get critiques from people who write well/have writing experience.

I also recommend Livejournal.com.  You can join writing groups on that website, which could be especially beneficial for you.  I would say to not use Blogger, since the community aspect of that website is not as strong.

Another tip:  If your school has a newspaper, join the staff!  Being good at English is a nice start for a journalist, but writing for English is very different from writing for Journalism.  Read newspapers as much as you can, and try to emulate the writing styles you see.  That's one of the best ways to learn, and you can use your blog to help you practice.

The best advice I got for Journalism writing was, write like you're talking to a friend, the way you'd tell them about something that happened.  Sometimes, being trained for English-style writing, that regularity gets lost in favor of something intended to be more complex or impressive.  You need to be clear, not too lengthy, and sound like a "real person."

Good luck!  You have plenty of time to practice and learn, especially since you're starting now.

  4. any exposure to writing is good for you. however, what is more essential is to read. especially in journalism, instead of majoring in one subject you have to be familiar with history, art, culture, music, icons, religion, politic, philosophy the list goes onnnnnnnnn.
