Question:

Would the Cross Country team hate me if I joined?

I tried out for 9th grade volleyball and didn't make it because I wasn't experienced enough.

So I'm thinking of doing XC.

But I haven't done XC before and am not a great runner, plus 9th grade is the last year of jr. high and most of the 9th graders have done it since 7th grade.

At volleyball I had the fastest 1/2 mile time, of 3:19.

My mile time from last year was like 7:45 or something.

I ran over the summer but didn't think about training for XC.

I don't have the best endurance, and am doing XC to build up for fastpitch, which is my main sport (starting pitcher).

So, is it okay that I'm not a great runner yet?

Will I be the only one?

And will the team despise me for making them lose?

  1. u wont make them lose w/ a 7:45 minute mile i promise u that, cuz i did cross country freshmen year of HS and some boys were doing 9 minute miles so dont worry u will be fine i promise u

  2. You're fine. If cross country is what you want to do then go for it. Skrew what the team will think, Im sure you will do well with practice and hard work.

  3. I run cross country, not everyone is a great runner, you'll get quicker fast though, it will get you in shape fast, trust me, i run 10th grade, im pretty good, 5min mile, you get worked pretty hard, if your willing to put in the effort you'll get a lot out of it.

WE have groups on our team, they will group together runners with similar times, don't worry you won't be the only one.

It is very fun, espec the races, email me if you want to be told more about it.

  4. As an underclassperson it doesn't really matter yet, since the teams usually put out their best players who are seniors or juniors

Just improve and you'll be fine

  5. You should definatley join. I'm in 9th grade too, and I was on XC in 7th grade. 7:45 is a great mile time, plus by joining cross-country it will get you in shape and improve your mile.

  6. witch school are you doing it at

  7. Give it a shot. In terms of the team winning / losing, you can't possibly make them lose by joining. It's not like basbeball where someone who's a terrible fielder can really hurt their team's chances of winning. Even if you're the slowest one on the team, it won't hurt their chances of winning at all.

If you're willing to work hard and try to get better, the team will probably be happy to have you.

  8. that's really funny!

i am in the same situation as you.

    i didn't make 9th grade v-ball either.

    i did join cross-country though.

so far I really like it.

it's tough work, but i like it.

if you have a 7:45 they will not hate you!

    haha

i'm a fastpitch pitcher too!! i'm the starter.

    :D this is really funny!!

so yeah, you should give it a try!!

e-mail me if you need any more advice!!

yay for people not making volleyball,

    doing cross country,

    and starting pitchers!!

    have a good day!!

  9. Being a skilled runner isn't a requirement for joining XC.

Heck at my school I was considered to be super fit to some degree by the coaches. I was pulled off the track by 3 different coaches at least 5 times during PE and asked to join the track or cross country team. You didn't see the coaches hassling anyone else to join it but I could outrun most of the schools athletes regardless of whether they were varsity football, soccer, cross country, or baseball. Everyone made fun of the way I ran in middle school, I was picked last in gym class till high school football when people learned that my new found running skills made me a tank at 6'0".

How I became so good at running I don't know, I eat 4000-6000 calories a day and can spend as much as every waking moment playing video games, not exercising, not playing sports or even going outside all that often. If someone with that kind of lifestyle can put dedicated athletes to shame I don't see why anyone should have to worry about being fast enough to make the team and not be hated.

  10. well i think you should ask your sports teacher...ask him if you are f**t for it and tell him to be 100% honest about it...and if he says you are not qualified than you can practice for other runs...trust me there are more runs than the Cross Country.

    Good Luck
