Would the Navy be a good place to start?

My friend is interested in anthropology, but we don't know what jobs anthropologists have. And his friend wants him to join the Navy with him; would that be a good start for him?

The U.S. Navy would be a better start than anthropology right now, unless one plans to study full-time, and can afford to do so, at Universities for 10 - 12 years after high school, which is what would be required for a career as an anthropologist.  BUT, when your friend meets with his or her Navy recruiter, this interest in anthropology should definitely be discussed.  I am unfamiliar with Naval specialties (jobs), but, there may actually be schools and training that would compliment anthropological interests.  Also, inquire about educational funds for service.

Only if by anthropology, you mean looting Iraqi museums.

While there are all sorts of skills he might learn that would apply, like various languages or surveying, all the navy would really offer would be an opportunity to earn some college money and to meet interesting, exotic people, and to kill them.

He would, most likely, end up with a medical tech job.  I suggest the Air Force instead.  He should try for officer training but he will have to remain in the service for a while to pay for that education.  If he goes to school on base they, most likely, won't have anthropology classes.  I foresee him losing interest in anthro if he goes into the military unless he has a burning desire.  The medical job would be the best because anthro is the study of humans and medical people study humans.

I would go talk to a Navy recruiter. They would have a good idea of what jobs he would be able to take and what they would be able to offer him educational wise.

The Navy does not use Anthropologists (the study of ancient man). Biologists, chemists yes. Contact a local college BEFORE you contact the Navy Recruiter, because the recruiter will BS you to sign papers!
