Question:

Would the bottom bracket of a bicycle that has been left for about twenty years be of any use?

I need bottom bracket parts, and as luck would have it I found an old Moulton that had been destroyed and left in a field for about twenty years. Everything else has been destroyed, and the hubs and headset are seized solid. However, the bottom bracket still moves freely. I am finding it difficult to remove the cotters, but assuming I can, is the bottom bracket likely to be of any use to me?

  1. Just check the condition of the bearing surfaces. If they are not pitted you should be OK bu replace the ball bearings

  2. Sure, the uses are legion: part of a welded sculpture, a weapon, etc.

  3. the ball bearings are probably U.S. but if it had been kept greased it could be ok.

  4. As long as there is no corrosion and pitting in the races, I would say it's fine to regrease and use again. Or you could replace the bearings as well for peace of mind.

BTW, you ever though of putting any of your collection on eBay Liam. You have a lot of nice vintage bikes that people would be interested in..."Cha-Ching"

  5. As said if there is no wear and tear on the races they should be ok.
