  1. Israel would, and Iran might be insane enough but they aren't that stupid.

  2. There isn't really a (close) ally to the U.S in the middle east besides Israel. But there may be another country or two that may back up the U.S.

  3. I wouldn't bet against several Arab countries backing the US against Iran. Remember Kuwait and Saudi Arabia both asked us to come in against Saddam. And we have some strong ties with several others in the area, Bahrain, and UAE for 2 of them. And Airbases in Turkey.

  4. You're logic is sound, but I think you may be underestimating the Israeli factor. Saudi-Arabia would never be part of a coalition that included the Jewish state. Also, it would defacto place them at odds with Syria (Iranian controlled), Jordan (Israeli enemy), and Hezbollah in Palestine (Nuff said).

It would also stir up it's native population, even if the government saw the advantages. Remember that the population is radical Muslim. Even as the government trades with us, a great deal of terrorist training and supply occurs there. So the government would be sticking it's neck out even within it's own borders.

I think the best one could hope for is a mild call of condemnation and then a lot of inactivity from Sadui Arabia. There might be some behind the scenes intervention with Lebanon and Jordan, perhaps even Syria. Palestine would certainly just to Iran's defense, especially if Israel was involved.

  5. I think you answered your own question, and succinctly gave the justification.  Yes, Iran is feared much more than anything the US has done in the region-by far.  The GCC's biggest criticism of US operations in Iraq-is exactly that it gives Iran a potential foothold further west.
